sketchbook challenge finale

I turn in my work for the Fill’er Up Sketchbook Challenge at ARTiculations this week. It worked out perfectly… March has 31 days & my paperback novel had 31 chapters for me to fill every other page with a drawing. Final tally: 139 drawings & here’s 3 of my favourites from the month’s end:

I was hoping to leave it on view in it’s entirety on the shelves at Earl Selkirk Gallery but the book has fallen apart. So instead, see if you can spot it on the wall of their display case from April 10th to the 26th.

This earlier post will explain my process.

sketchbook challenge week 4

My sketchbook challenge is quickly drawing to a close. Here is a selection of my favourites from week 4:SBC2015c

The Fill’er Up Sketchbook Challenge has been a yearly event hosted by ARTiculations. It culminates in a group show held in their Earl Selkirk Gallery space in April.

With a few days left to the end of March, I only have 12 blank pages left to complete a drawing on every other page of this vintage paperback book.  This earlier post explains my process.

This has been a yearly challenge posed by ARTiculations which culminates in a group show in their Earl Selkirk Gallery space in April.

sketchbook challenge 2015

For the month of March, I’ll be faithfully filling my sketchbook for the Fill’er Up Sketchbook Challenge, a yearly show hosted by ARTiculations in their Earl Selkirk Gallery space.

I’ve challenged myself with this task; to draw on every other page of this vintage paperback novel in a redactive method. I’m censoring the text with these minimalist black and white patterns and in turn, the layout of the text block limits how much of the pattern is visible.

Half of the month is over and I’m over halfway through the book; 284 pages should yield 142 drawings. Here’s 14 of them:SBC2015a

A Square Divided Horizontally and Vertically…

A new minimalist drawing from a series of work inspired by a theme of ‘art directing censorship’. I draw through the text only in a pattern of visual gradation from dark to a light. I leave the spaces in the text to interrupt the ombre effect.

This layout was inspired by a Sol LeWitt wall drawing; ‘A Square Divided Horizontally and Vertically into Four Equal Parts, Each with a Different Direction of Alternating Parallel Bands of Lines’. BWieler book paper drawing 6 (8)x
It’s interesting to allow the viewer to read the text that is still exposed & guess my source materials. It’s part of the game. BWieler book paper drawing 6 (2)x

My intention is to treat these drawings as trials for larger work. More from this series coming soon.

origami ombre

The beginning of a new series of origami constructions, I call this ombre. Made from 12 different papers in tones of white, ivory & grey. Included in this mix: vintage book papers, sheet music, beautiful Japanese papers & papers with metallic & pearlized finishes. All folded into small hounds tooth shapes that fit together like a large tessellation.

I refurbished the vintage frame with matte black lacquer & rebuilt the interior into a shadow box allowing space for the 3D sculptural form. There is a smaller version available at Cobalt Gallery in Toronto as part of Annette’s Holiday Festival Group Show. I’m looking forward to making more!

Curio…

What started as an open call for a group show at Articulations’ Earl Selkirk Gallery was an opportunity to play with an idea I’ve been mulling over for some time. Embroidery & pine needles.

I like Canadiana & I had kept this rustic woodland deer motif from my days designing sweaters for a Toronto manufacturer. I just needed to alter the layout to fit the shadow box restrictions for the show. The pine needles I collected last year were still fragrant as I cross stitched them down onto the paper. I’m hoping to expand on this idea with a series of sculptural works.

I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the work on display during the show.

condensing the world…

This is a new set of square wood panels from a continuing series – making origami shapes with vintage map paper painted with white gouache & then coating the completed tile with wax. As I’m folding the map paper, I’m condensing the world, making it smaller. Changing the globe in my own small way.BWieler origami Panel No10

The possibilities are endless and the potential for installation too, from small & intimate to a large corporate wall.

You can find this set in my shop bookBW.etsy.com. And of course, if you want to discuss a custom installation for your space, I’m happy to answer your questions. Contact me here: bookBW@hotmail.com

New Work for a Gallery Holiday Show

This is part of my collection that I delivered to Cobalt Gallery for their Holiday Group Show. Drop by to see my larger collection of curiosities that Annette & I hung yesterday.

I focused on maps & book paper, making origami constructions & ink drawings, all fitted into vintage frames that I refurbished & made into shadow boxes in some cases. There’s even a vintage clock with a geometric ink drawing on book paper.

BWieler Holiday 2014

The show runs from November 15 to December 23, 2014.
Opening reception on Sunday November 23rd from 1 to 4 pm. Maybe I’ll see you there.

See the invitation details here.
